Celebrating Intercultural Dialogue
About the ‘Cultures from Around the Block’ project:
Involving partners from Coventry, Bratislava, Frankfurt, Brussels, Bucharest, Prague, Warsaw and Vienna, the ‘Cultures from Around The Block’ project focuses on the local community. Through eight local media projects, "Cultures from Around the Block" supports the exchange of information about intercultural neighbourhoods and the experiences of grass-root organisations. All project partners have initiated media arts projects culturally diverse schools with students aged 14-18; the students have documented each other's neighbourhoods and have learned about the different communities whilst promoting intercultural communication.
The project aims:
- To engage local community (young people and artists) in the intercultural dialogue and to support the exchange of information about different cultures between young people
- to build an increased fascination for learning about different cultures and finding new ways to engage the students in the intercultural dialogue.
- to develop personal characteristics such as confidence, self esteem and pride; as well as improving various skills such as media skills and team work.
The UK project has consisted of a series of cultural awareness and photography workshops provided by Research House UK for students in a local school in Coventry called Woodway Park School (now called the Grace Academy). Students have learned various photography and media skills in an endeavour to develop visual messages that celebrate cultural diversity and promote social coehsion. This virtual exhibition showcases some of their work.
